Friday June 30 at 6pm - Fireworks
Did you ever notice that sometimes flowers look like fireworks? In this class, we’ll use flowers as inspiration to paint fireworks. We’ll use some simple watercolor techniques, including using masking fluid to block out dots in our painting, use wet on wet techniques to create our fireworks, and then finish our paintings with metallic paints and pens.
Saturday July 8 at 6pm - Meditation and Mandalas
The focus of this workshop is on bringing peace to our minds and bodies. We will start off with a brief meditation amidst the gorgeous backdrop of Rooted Farmstead. Then we will create a simple mandala using prepared watercolor paper and your choice of colored markers and pens. We’ll finish our mandala with a simple watercolor painting of your choice! Leave feeling relaxed and happy after this session.
Saturday August 26 at 6pm - Inspired by Dahlias
In this class, we’ll use dahlias as inspiration to create a loose watercolor floral painting. We will learn some basic techniques for watercolor, including different brush
strokes, wet-on-wet painting, wet-on-dry painting, and some simple flower and leaf shapes. Specific tips for painting the dahlia will be provided! Leave feeling inspired and knowing that everyone can be an artist!
Sunday September 24 at 11am - Floral Landscape
In this class, we’ll create a fall landscape using a fall-inspired color palette, while surrounded by the beauty of Rooted Farmstead. We’ll first do a gradient wash for our background, and then paint small, delicate flowers and leaves. We’ll finish up our painting with some fun splatter. With practice and training, we’ll get better and better at making detailed marks for our landscape!
Saturday October 7 at 11am - Pick and Paint a Pumpkin!
In this beginner-friendly workshop, attendees will pick out a gourdeous pumpkin (available for purchase separately) and use it as inspiration to create individualized watercolor paintings! The focus on this project will be using a combination of wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry watercolor techniques to create unique masterpieces that reflect our own individuality. We will explore using additional media beyond watercolor, such as opaque white paint, metallics, and acrylic markers, to make our paintings fit our own personal pumpkin brand! Although Halloween is a spooky time, this class is nothing to be fearful of! Sarah will demonstrate some tricks and tips that make watercolor painting as easy as pie, pumpkin pie that is!

About Your Instructor, Sarah Zappe!
My name is Sarah Zappe. I work as the director of a teaching and learning center in the College of Engineering at Penn State. While I am an educational psychologist by training, I have always been drawn to the creative arts. I have been able to weave my love of creativity into my work, as I have done research on the creative process and growth mindset in the engineering context. I became a watercolor artist in 2020, as painting allowed me to find a new meditative outlet to handle the anxiety of the pandemic. I live in State College, PA with my 13-year-old son, Ethan, and two furry golden retrievers. I am also a certified Mindfulness and Meditation Practitioner and absolutely love watercolor painting and flowers!
